Johnny 'Papa John' Smith (bassist) Born in Washington, D.C.; he began his love for music at an early age as he followed several 'grass root' bands on their national tours. Inspired by the positive, highly energetic performances, he constantly searched for ways to maintain that 'spiritual high'; thus, he began to focus on the virtues of Reggae music. While attending SUNY at Oswego, NY, he decided to start a band. After graduation, he moved to Albany, and with the help of other eager musicians, IMI was born. Borrowing styles from great performers such as Steel Pulse, Jimmy Cliff, Sly & Robbie, Yellow Man, and the late, Bob Marley, he gathered momentum and popularity with each show he booked. And, because of his 'balls to the wall' attitude, Johnny was able to procure a 'once in a lifetime' appearance at Woodstock '94! |
